What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a submission grappling sport traditionally done while wearing a Gi. Our BJJ classes are seperated in to 3 different categories: Beginner, Adult, and Competition Team Training.

Beginner BJJ is held Monday and Wednesday at 6:15PM. This class is designed to guide you through your first days of BJJ! Learn the fundamental movements so you can continue to sharpen your tool belt in more advanced classes.

Adult BJJ is your typical Jiu-Jitsu class. Held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7PM, Saturdays at 11:30AM. For advanced teens or 18+ this class is embodies everything you imagine when you think “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu”. Classes are taught with the assumption you know the basics and can follow most lessons. Even if it’s your first day, you are than welcome! However, you may not be rolling for likely the first week. Dress out in a Gi, join us on the mats, and experience a sport unlike any other!

BJJ Comp. Team  is an additional 30 minutes at the end of Adult BJJ classes (Tuesdays/ Thursdays). This is extra rolling for competitors and seamlessly transitions from Adult BJJ. This class is completly optional, however if you are interested in competing you will need to attend.

How does BJJ benefit me?

Meet Tony! He was living a sedentary lifestyle and gaining weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes, he knew he needed to make a change. Tony started his Journey with Team Independent through our Villa Rica location 3 years ago and never looked back. He claims to owe everything to “hardwork, dedication, and consistency…and a lot of jiu-jitsu”. What do I do in BJJ class?

WARM-UPS

Each class starts with 15-20 minutes of warm-ups. Starting with a jog students will run around the mat completing various exercises. Next the class will form 2 lines and perform fundamental BJJ movements as the instructor calls them out. Lastly, water break, then technique!

TECHNIQUE

The instructor will gather everyone in a circle and demonstrates the “technique of the day”. Students are then paired up and will drill the technique for 5-10 minutes. This process is repeated as the instructor goes more and more in depth to the technique and adds moves or addresses small details. This is the bulk of class and usually lasts 45 minutes.

ROLLING

Rolling is the BJJ way of having fun! The last 30 minutes of class is spent rolling with teammates. Students main goal should be to learn. There is no winning or losing in class training! Utilize the technique of the day, or try out something funky you saw on YouTube. No one wants to get hurt, everyone wants to go to work the next day. Tap Early, Tap Often. Learn and have fun!

Biography

Chris Ruiz is Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under 6th degree multi-world champion Roberto Traven. A five time Black Belt IBJJF Atlanta Summer/Winter International Gold Medal holder, in Gi and No Gi Master 2 tournaments, and holds an 8-2 Amateur MMA record. 

Classes

Professor Chris teaches Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5PM and 6PM. He also teaches Adult BJJ at 7PM Tuesdays and Thursdays.
